Halifax River Yacht Club was incorporated on May 19, 1896, by a handful of Daytona sailors who raced gaff-rigged catboats on the Halifax River and wanted a club of their own; Victor Vuillaume was elected the first commodore. It is believed to be the oldest yacht club on the East Coast still operating on its original site: one downtown-Daytona organization in continuous operation across three centuries.
The club sits on Beach Street in downtown Daytona Beach, on the Halifax River stretch of the Intracoastal Waterway, where founding member Laurence Thompson granted the riparian rights for its first wharf in 1896. From that original footprint it has grown into a full-service private club with a marina on the ICW.
Racing and cruising on the Halifax River remain part of club life, and Halifax River Yacht Club is known for a strong reciprocal tradition across the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. Its members cruise the state’s club network, and visiting reciprocal members are a regular presence on its docks.
The club is private and member-owned, with reciprocal privileges for visiting yacht-club members. Membership is by sponsorship through the club’s membership office, which also handles reciprocal-visit arrangements.
