American Sailing Academy

The base is a cottage resort: the academy teaches from Key Lime Sailing Club on Buttonwood Sound, bayside Key Largo, where students can sleep in a waterfront cottage during the course and walk to the boat in the morning. Florida Bay does the teaching-water work, shallow, protected, and forgiving, with mangrove islands to navigate around instead of ship channels.

Scheduling is the school’s own kind of flexible: courses run on demand, “363 days a year” by its own count, rather than off a fixed calendar. Basic Keelboat (101), Basic Coastal Cruising (103), and Bareboat Cruising (104) each run three days, or two in the hybrid format that moves the bookwork online; Coastal Navigation (105) is self-paced, and Cruising Catamaran (114) runs on cats in the 30-to-45-foot range. The boats climb with the student: Catalina 22s for the fundamentals, 33-to-36-footers for coastal work, bigger stock for the bareboat course.

The graduation present is the practical part: certified students get free use of the club’s Catalina 22 fleet, which turns the certificate into unsupervised practice hours on the same water it was earned on. Instructors are USCG-licensed, ASA-certified captains. Veterans, active military, and reservists get a discounted 101 through ASA’s Veterans Sailing Education Program.
