Coconut Grove Sailing Club was founded in 1946 as a community sailing club on Biscayne Bay, and it has grown into one of the largest of its kind in Florida: more than 1,100 members sharing a mooring field, a clubhouse at 2990 South Bayshore Drive, and a fleet of club boats. Unlike its private neighbors on the Grove waterfront, CGSC is a US Sailing–affiliated, open-membership club: anyone can join, and its classes and camps run open to non-members.

The club’s formal instruction runs through the CGSC Instructional Center, which teaches adults and juniors from first-time learn-to-sail through racing on keelboats and dinghies. Youth summer camps and after-school programs move kids from Optimists into club 420s and keelboats, and members race the Biscayne Bay Yacht Racing Association season series against the bay’s other clubs.

Because it owns a mooring field and a teaching fleet, CGSC is also the Grove’s most accessible on-ramp to Biscayne Bay sailing for someone who doesn’t own a boat. It is a place to learn, then keep sailing without a private-club sponsorship.

Coconut Grove Sailing Club is open to the public, and no member sponsorship is required to take part.
