Key Biscayne Yacht Club

The founding charter set out to “promote boating in all of its branches” and to run “a well-rounded, interesting program of Corinthian marine activities,” 1955 phrasing that has aged better than most, because the club still does roughly that. Adult racing fields an unusually wide spread of classes for a single club: PHRF and ARC handicap fleets alongside Etchells, J/24s, J/70s, Finns, VX Ones, and ILCAs. Few clubs anywhere can put that many distinct one-design starts on the same water, and Biscayne Bay is the reason: flat water, dependable breeze, and enough resident racers to keep every one of those fleets viable.

Round the Island is the club’s own distance race, and the annual regatta anchors the calendar. The club also takes on national-level events when they come up; the Finn Nationals have been sailed here.

Youth sailing starts at six and splits into two tracks: Learn to Sail for beginners, and the Sailing Academy for kids already racing. The top end of that program travels (KBYC teams turn up at regattas well outside Florida), and summer camps feed the whole thing. It runs out of a staffed sailing center open Tuesday through Sunday, which is the practical difference between a club that has a junior program and a club that has a junior operation.

For a club with a roster this small, that is a lot of program. The trade is intimacy for scale: the Coconut Grove clubs across the bay are far larger, and KBYC has stayed deliberately tight.
