Lauderdale Yacht Club

The youth program is structured as a genuine pathway rather than a summer camp with a race team bolted on. It starts with Lil’ Optis for the smallest sailors, moves into a coached Opti Green Fleet for developing racers, and tops out in the Gold and Silver championship fleets where the travelling regatta schedule begins. A high-school race team runs alongside it, with an open high-school program for sailors who aren’t club members. That’s worth knowing, because that door is shut at most private clubs on this coast.

Past Optimists the club sails the Olympic-adjacent end of the sport: ILCA 7s, Nacra 15 catamarans, and 29er skiffs. That is a deliberately hard set of boats. A club fielding 29ers and Nacra 15s is one that expects its teenagers to capsize repeatedly and come back, and it puts LYC sailors on the same equipment as the national youth circuit.

The regatta calendar follows from the equipment. The Lauderdale Olympic Classes Regatta (LOCR) races ILCAs, Nacra 15s and 29ers offshore; the Boomerang Regatta is the other fixture; and the club runs its own International Opti Team Race Trophy. It hosted the Nacra 15 World Championship in 2023, which is the clearest measure of what the program can organize when it wants to.
