Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta (Club 420 launch site)
The US Sailing Center hosts the Club 420 launch site for the Orange Bowl, the Americas' largest international youth regatta, organized by Coral Reef Yacht Club.
The center’s stated purpose is the “training of Olympic sailors and the racing of National and International sailboat classes.” Unusually, that sentence is literal. The US Olympic Sailing Team trains here, the center runs Olympic Training and Olympic Development Team programs, and the racing of national and international classes is in the charter alongside them. If you want to watch the top of the sport from a public seawall, this is one of the few places in the country you can.
What keeps it from being a closed high-performance camp is the other half of the charter: the center explicitly invites children and adult residents of Miami to use the facility for competitive sailing, and community programs run alongside the elite ones. The gradient from a first capsize to an Olympic campaign exists on one property, which is the whole argument for the community-sailing-center model.
Each December the center serves as the Club 420 launch site for the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, the largest international youth regatta in the Americas, which fills Dinner Key with teenage fleets between Christmas and New Year. It is the best week of the year to stand on the shore and understand what Biscayne Bay is for.
US Sailing Center Miami is open to the public: no member sponsorship required to take part. Class schedules, program fees, and any membership or annual-pass options are posted on its website.
