Florida is the rare place you can sail year-round, and a sailing vacation here can be anything from a captained sunset cruise to a two-week bareboat down the Keys. The trick is matching the format, the place, and the season to who’s coming.
Pick a format
- Crewed charter. A captain runs the boat; you sail, snorkel, and don’t stand a watch. Best for first-timers, honeymoons, and mixed-experience groups. No certification required. See the crewed operators.
- Bareboat charter. You skipper it yourself. The most freedom and the best value per person. What the company wants is evidence you can bring the boat back: at most Florida docks a sailing résumé or a checkout sail, at two of the 22 listed rental companies a certificate, as of October 2026. - Learn-to-sail vacation. Spend the week earning ASA 101–104 aboard a cruising boat and come home certified. - Membership / by-the-seat. Membership fleets and day sails for people who want the water without the whole week.
Pick a place
- The Florida Keys. The signature Florida cruise: reef anchorages, turquoise water, Key West at the end. Start with the Keys cruising itinerary and Key West.
- Biscayne Bay & Miami. Protected flat water, a deep sailing culture, and the Gulf Stream offshore. Great for learning and for day sailing in Miami.
- The Gulf coast. Big forgiving bays and shoal-draft island-hopping around Sarasota, Fort Myers, and the Sanibel–Captiva islands (see Tampa Bay & the Gulf Coast).
- The Panhandle. The clearest water in the state and uncrowded harbors around Pensacola.
Pick a season
November through May is prime: steady trades, low humidity, and the smallest storm risk. Summer sailing is warm and lovely in the morning but thundery by afternoon and inside hurricane season (June 1–November 30). Winter brings cold fronts every week or so: a day of strong wind, then it’s back to postcard conditions.
Honeymoons and special trips
A crewed monohull or catamaran with a night or more at anchor is the classic Florida sailing honeymoon: privacy, dinner on deck, and someone else handling the sailing. The companies to ask are the crewed operators that run overnight trips. As of October 2026 those are Smooth Sailing of Miami (a Lagoon 42 from Coconut Grove to Bimini), Destino (Biscayne Bay to the Keys), Fun In The Sun and Calypso (the Keys and the Bahamas, with a captain if you want one), Southern Star (Pensacola to Orange Beach), and Follow That Dream and Now and Zen (Amelia and Cumberland Islands). Ask each about cabins, cooking and what a two-person booking looks like; the listings carry the boats and the water, not the packages.
